Hey there, Kidney Warrior!

Does this sound like you?

  • You’re reading so much about what you “need” to avoid, but you can’t tell what’s right and what’s wrong.

  • All you're reading and hearing is “be careful...everything in moderation...” or worse- "just avoid it."

  • You’re tired of dealing with conflicting diet information from website to website, doctor to doctor - it’s time-consuming and confusing!

  • You are getting frustrated with figuring out what to eat that’s not only good for you but also tastes good!

  • You dread mealtimes because you don't know what to eat. You're sick of trying to figure it out and then stress about it later.

  • You’ve heard a plant-based diet can be a good thing for your health and your kidneys, but you don’t know how (or where) to start. It’s overwhelming!

  • You’re scared you’re going to eat the wrong thing and hurt your kidneys.

  • You want to keep your kidneys as healthy as possible with the best, most nutritious foods.

If you’ve been nodding your head, know that

you are not alone!

So many kidney warriors have experienced the same fears.

But imagine this…

You find yourself bursting with energy you never realized you had.

You feel comfortable in your body - never bloated, fatigued or drained!

Food tastes amazing, and even better in that you know you’re fueling yourself with the best foods for your kidneys!

You stop fearing your nephrologist appointments.

In fact, your doctor is amazed at your results and cuts your appointments back to every 6 months - or even annually!

You get even more time to spend on yourself and your loved ones doing what you love.

You get to eat foods that you have avoided for years, and still keep your kidneys safe (or even better)!

Great course and text. I am a retired Physician Assistant, and I was amazed at the amount and accuracy if the info provided on potassium. I also learned that I am not eating anywhere near the amount of fruits and veggies that I should be consuming. It's going to be a heavy lift to cut way back on animal protein, but since the health of my kidneys, and therefore my whole body, I see that I will have to. It looks like I've found a wonderful guide for handholding throughout the process. Thanks Jen.

I really enjoyed the course and have been trying the recipes. I had read so many conflicting opinions about what to eat that I was afraid to eat anything and was in such a rut with food, which was causing gut health issues. I look forward to continuing to be a part of this group and receiving new information and recipes. Thank you for the information and I'll be anxious to see how making these changes affects my labs. I'm currently stage 3b and my hope is to keep it that way!

Introduction

Kidneys 101 Orientation

Learn what the kidneys are responsible for and how that can impact our health.

Reviewing this is essential in understanding what happens in kidney disease.

We review:

  • What potassium is
  • Signs and symptoms of high and low potassium
  • HOW to understand where your potassium levels stand
  • HOW to determine if YOU need to eat less, more, or the same amount of potassium to protect your kidneys

    Support and Questions

Is this course for....

Find out if this course is for you!

  • Stage 3a or 3b?

YES! For those in stages 1-3b, this is the right time (and maybe only time) to take this course! You will learn how to eat well to protect your kidney function.

  • Stage 4 CKD?

At stage 4, some people start to experience more symptoms and complications. If you are in stage 4 and NOT experiencing severe symptoms (for example, consistently uncontrolled potassium), this course may help. If you are having difficulty controlling your potassium levels, you would likely benefit from working privately with a dietitian. They will be able to give you a list of priorities and customize your nutrition guidelines.

  • Stage 5 CKD?

Stage 5 CKD is a very fragile state of CKD. We highly recommend working with a dietitian privately as soon as possible to protect the remaining kidney function. If you are starting dialysis soon in the United States, you will have a dietitian in the dialysis clinic who will be a great resource for you. Dialysis nutrition is very different from CKD nutrition.

  • For someone with diabetes & CKD?

If your blood sugars are controlled at this time and you're in early-stage CKD, then YES! One of our modules is dedicated to carbohydrates to help you understand the importance of them, even with diabetes. All recipes and meal plans include a breakdown of carbohydrates. We have had students report improved blood sugar control and A1c after completing the course!

  • My child with kidney disease?

No, this course includes nutrition details and education for adults with CKD. We recommend working with a pediatric dietitian that can provide nutrition information and explanations for kiddo kidney health.

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease?

While there will be certain aspects of kidney health related to PKD that are covered, PKD has different nutrition focuses. We recommend working with a dietitian that specializes in the PKD nutrition approach.

  • CKD caused by genetics?

So long as you're in early stages of CKD (1-3b), then YES! Even those that don't have CKD from diabetes or high blood pressure can benefit in eating well. This course teaches the essentials for eating to protect kidney health, even when it's caused by a genetics of CKD.

Let's stop the confusion.

You've spent hours and hours, pouring over the internet trying to figure out what it means to be on a renal diet. That ends now.

Don't just listen to us...

Here is what PPK graduates have said about the course.

BUN in range!

anonymous

"Thanks to this course, I've gone from 45 to 60 GFR, normalized my BUN, and just feel so much healthier."

International Students Welcome!

Cheryl F.

"Living in Malaysia it's been really hard to get good, reliable info on CKD diet/food/lifestyle - from a Western perspective. I look forward to introducing some of our local foods back into my diet now that I understand more about carbs, proteins and portion controls in relation to CKD. My new understanding of kidney friendly foods (I had eliminated so many good foods from my diet) has helped me in my CKD journey of losing weight, getting healthier and enjoying food again. Thanks, Jen! Cheers! (Aussie in Malaysia) "

More Confidence in Our Food Choices!

Alison R.

"This course has given me much more confidence to feel I am cooking what is BEST for my husband to help him maintain his kidney function. At first I found it a bit challenging to cook in a different way to the meat and veggie meals of the past. Worry about IF I was cooking the right meals was a BIG burden for me prior to being able to do the course. Now I find it easier and the more I make the different recipes, the easier it is."

I'm not restricting foods!

anonymous

I am not restricting foods, but rather understanding how various nutrients affect me and my labs, and how to adjust my diet accordingly. Jen is a fountain of knowledge and an easy person to get to know, and I've enjoyed meeting and learning from others walking the same path as me.

For those looking to get a start on the right renal nutrition plan.

Join this program to gain access to an exclusive group of people all with the same focus - to make huge changes in their diet by going plant-based. Everyone in this class will have the same goal in mind - to keep their kidneys healthy and safe from decline.

This program has been designed after working with kidney warriors for the past year and compiling all of the tools, resources, and education they needed to feel supported and comfortable in not only managing but owning your kidney disease.

More energy and up to stage 3b!

Teresa P.

When I was first diagnosed with CKD in 2009, it was very hard to find resources I needed to help me choose a diet. I have an autoimmune disease which causes my body to attack my kidneys. There was always conflicting evidence about certain amounts, numbers, and things we could or could not eat. I did the best I could with the info I had. I was able to get my protein loss down, and with meatless diet and certain drugs achieved a remission for a number of years. Then in 2019 I was hospitalized for 2 weeks with an unknown virus. It put me out of remission, and again I struggled to find the balance my kidneys needed. I found the Plant Powered Kidney facebook group in late 2020 and found many things I was looking for, including the class. I am thankful I found them. I continue to work on getting the protein loss under control but I can honestly say I feel better, have increased energy, and my skin is less itchy. I am currently at stage 3b CKD.

In completing this course, you’ll see results like…

  • More energy to keep up with your family and active lifestyle
  • Less bloating to weigh you down

  • More food freedom - even with kidney disease!

  • Confidence in creating delicious, healthy, kidney-friendly meals in your own kitchen

Is this what you would expect having kidney disease?

Feeling motivated!

Pat S.

"My labs improved greatly after following the whole foods plant based diet. I feel better and am very encouraged to continue!"

Weekly Recipes and Sample Meal Plans Included!

Start off with tasty plant-based recipes each week during the course.

Each week you will get a new meal plan that includes delicious recipes intended for kidney health. Along with the meal plans come grocery lists and nutrition analysis of each recipe and each day in the sample meal plans. Learn what to track and what to let go of. Learn what to take advantage of when it comes to your best kidney nutrition!

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask us before enrolling in the PPK Course.

  • Is this course for ANYONE with ANY type of CKD?

This course was designed for adults in stages 1-3a/b to prevent further kidney damage. While those in stage 4 & 5 can also take this course, we recommend working privately with a dietitian to take care of important priorities that don't have as much time. Those on or starting dialysis soon are not advised to take this course. Additionally, those with PKD will benefit from a separate program as there are different nutrition protocols for PKD.

  • Why does the course cost so much?

Actually, the value of the course and everything included is HUGE. The course is a fraction of the investment required to work one-on-one, and we pack so much information within the course to fast-track your learning experience, helping you get results faster. Many students have said the investment is "worth every penny," and even said we should be charging more. You can also use your HSA/FSA card to cover the cost of the course!

  • How long do I have access to the course?

The course is 6 weeks long with weekly live Q&A sessions. However, life happens and you may need time to catch up. To help out, students will get access to all the content, handouts, meal plans, and recipes for 3 months.

  • Is this course covered by insurance?

While insurance will not cover the course, your health savings account (HSA) or flex savings account (FSA) may! Check with your company to be sure!

  • Do we review labs in the course?

While we are not allowed to personally review your labs inside the course, we will talk about lab ranges, what to ask your doctor about, and more. You will be provided with a Lab Tracker so you can monitor your progress and note when things are good/bad/funky. If you really want to review your labs with us so we can provide you with customized feedback and plans, we would need to work together privately.

  • Can I take this course instead of seeing a dietitian?

We will always advocate for private work with a dietitian. But if that doesn't feel right for you yet, you have to wait a while before seeing your dietitian, or you want to learn some basics first, this is the way to do it. And if/when you meet with a dietitian (or even at your next doctor appointment), we promise they will be floored with all of your knowledge from this course!

  • I'm at stage 5 and my doctor is talking to me about dialysis. Will this program help me?

This program is intended for those not yet in conversation with their doctor about dialysis. While you could still take the course to learn more about different areas of a renal diet, you may be left with more questions than answers. We help people privately in these cases to give the most specific nutrition guidelines.

  • Do your recipes include nutrition information?

Yes! Each weekly meal plan includes a full nutrition panel including calories, protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron content. The meal plan is intended to show you how the recipes can tally up in a day, and we don't expect you to follow a meal plan. This is why each recipe also includes its own nutrition information per serving! Not only will you see the daily summary of nutrition, but also per serving of each recipe so you can mix and match recipes to best fit your nutritional needs!

  • What if I have kidney stones?

Kidney stones are a painful and rough situation, but many can be resolved with diet! While this course does not review kidney stones, we highly recommend you look at Melanie's Kidney Stone Nutrition School.

Is it worth the investment?

Here's what one student said in the course not even 48 HOURS after we STARTED!

(And we still had the next 5+ WEEKS to go!)

Special Bonus Content!

Not only will you get everything mentioned already, you'll also get...

  • Pantry Staples: A 16-Recipe Bundle (A $17 value!)

Grab a bonus 16 recipes focused on using pantry staples. Set yourself up for those nights when there's "nothing to eat!"

  • Beyond the Diet: Mindful Eating with CKD (A $97 value!)

Watch and learn from guest speaker Jen Draper, MA, RD, LD about reconnecting body and mind with eating for kidney health.

  • A free copy of the PPK eCookbook! (A $20 value!)

You'll be swimming in all the meals and recipe ideas with our bonuses AND weekly meal plans.

Don't take our word for it. Here's what other students have said!

I’m very glad that I participated in this course because I learned so much about chronic kidney disease. I feel that the knowledge I've gained has empowered me to ask informed questions during my visits with my family doctor and kidney specialist. The information has also helped me become more proactive in planning and following a healthy diet that will work to prevent CKD from becoming more debilitating. I must say, “Hats off” to Jenn for her EXCELLENT presentations online, and the information sheets she prepared as “handouts” for us, as well as her unwavering support and prompt attention in answering our questions! The "PPK Community" page that she created for course participants makes me feel like a special member of a large “Kidney Warrior” family, that exists to help us all share information, provide support, and to learn from one another. Perhaps best of all, however, is discovering, as I listened to Jenn’s knowledge, expertise, and passion for this critical medical issue, that being diagnosed with CKD is not a death sentence. If anyone wants to learn how to take an active role in successfully managing chronic kidney disease, I would highly recommend participating in this course. It certainly has made a positive impact on my life, and I believe it may be a life saver for you or other members of your family. Theodosia

I highly recommend taking this 6wk PPK course at any stage of CKD. I have learned so much about how to slow down the progression of this disease by understanding and eating the right foods that can slow down this progression. I can now understand how to read food labels on almost everything, I can read and understand my bloodwork more efficiently and what questions to ask my doctor about my health. But that is just a few things you will learn. There is also a Q&A part of this course that you can ask questions about your health and topics previously discussed. You will not be disappointed when you take this course because you become a member for life.

How is this different than the other online kidney classes?

Some companies hold in-person and online classes about what to expect with dialysis.

They will touch on nutrition for a segment, but it’s not the focus.

And it's definitely not about keeping kidney function.

In this program, we deep-dive into renal nutrition for 6 weeks

We don’t get into dialysis because that’s not what this course is about.

This course was created from the questions and conversations we have had with CKD patients over and over again when it comes to the right way to address nutrition from the start with kidney issues.

And we know that if they felt better after getting these questions answered, you can too.

This program is not for you if…

  • You are happy with your current food choices.

  • You are on dialysis or getting ready to start dialysis.

  • You’re not ready to invest your time and energy into a better diet to keep your kidneys healthy.

Also included: over 16 helpful handouts and guides!

Download accompanying handouts to use whenever you need.

  • PPK Course Workbook

  • Kidney Health Grocery Shopping Guide

  • PPK Lab Tracker

  • A Guide to Understanding Potassium

  • Nutrition Facts Label for CKD

  • Get the Facts: Sodium and the Dietary Guidelines

  • CKD Problems with Digestion

  • Salt Comparison Chart

  • Be Wary: Supplements and CKD

  • And many more!

Your Teacher

Renal Dietitian

Jen Hernandez RDN, CSR, LDN

Jen has been a registered dietitian since 2013. Very soon after becoming a dietitian, she was given an opportunity to work at a dialysis clinic to help people with end stage kidney failure. It was after working several years in dialysis, seeing people come into the clinic in shock and disbelief that their kidneys failed so soon, that Jen decided to help more people from coming to dialysis. In 2018, Jen opened her virtual private practice and began helping people with chronic kidney disease make nutrition and lifestyle changes to prevent kidney failure and dialysis. This was the creation of Plant-Powered Kidneys. Jen has hosted the Plant-Powered Kidneys course for hundreds of people with early-stage CKD and want to be sure they are doing whatever they can to prevent kidney failure and dialysis. With so many students raving about their own kidney success from learning more about kidney nutrition, she hopes to help many more to come!
